Internationale keramiek tentoonstelling ‘Art-Ganic’

Galerie Kempro organiseert alweer voor de achttiende maal een keramiektentoonstelling en is er ook dit jaar weer in geslaagd, met medewerking van curator en gerenommeerd keramiste Patty Wouters, een bijzondere tentoonstelling neer te zetten. De aangeschreven keramisten vervaardigden speciaal voor deze tentoonstelling unieke stukken. De titel ‘Art-Ganic’ refereert naar het organische karakter van het keramiek van deze groep internationale kunstenaars.

Barbro Åberg (DK)
Organische vormen en figuren zijn al geruime tijd een terugkerend thema in het werk van Åberg. Åberg vindt deze overvloed aan inspiratie enerzijds in de natuur; dieren, planten, fossielen, zaden en peulen. Anderzijds via microscopische weergaven en de macrokosmos die ons omringt. Vormen en structuren die niet zichtbaar zijn voor het menselijk oog, maar die we kunnen zien middels een microscoop. ‘Tijdens het werken aan een nieuwe sculptuur wordt het proces niet alleen geïnspireerd door mijn schets, maar ook gedreven door mijn intuïtie, mijn gedachten en reflecties tijdens het werkproces en de aanwezigheid, de intensiteit van het moment.’

Reinhilde van Grieken (BE)
Van Grieken is Keramist-Beeldhouwer. Vaak vertaalt ze uit de actualiteit maatschappelijk onaanvaardbare gebeurtenissen in drie dimensies. Soms is het pijnlijk en wreed, soms grappig en humoristisch. Van Grieken vindt interactie met het publiek duidelijk belangrijk. Door de subtiele manier waarop ze het onderwerp aansnijdt en verbergt in haar werk komt de confrontatie bij de toeschouwer pas later of dringt het heel langzaam tot hem door. De klei wordt als drager gebruikt voor haar verhaal, zoals een schilder doet met het canvas. Maar ze laat zich niet tegenhouden om klei ook ten volle te benutten als plastisch materiaal. De grenzen tussen figuratief en abstract vallen voor haar helemaal weg.

Martha Pachon Rodriguez (IT)
Pachon Rodriguez studeerde Fine Arts aan de Surcolombiana University in Colombia. In het begin van haar carrière waren haar keramische werken grootschalige installaties in terracotta of steengoed. Later, na haar studie Porselein en Steengoed aan het ‘Instituto d’Arte per la Ceramica’ in Faenza, Italië, begon Pachon Rodriguez aan de ontwikkeling van conceptueel, thematisch porseleinwerk. ‘Voor de kunstenaar is het creëren van unieke stukken een evenement welke een reis vertegenwoordigt die een heilige dimensie omvat, een magische rite, een intellectuele gebeurtenis die tijd, geduld, vaardigheid en vreugde nodig heeft.’

Beatrijs van Rheeden (NL)
Het porselein werk van Van Rheeden is duidelijk geworteld in een Nederlandse traditie van abstracte vormen, helder van lijn en in de essentie eenvoudig. Haar werk ontstaat intuïtief. Haar fascinatie voor structuren en de onregelmatigheden die zich daarbinnen kunnen vinden, komt tot uiting op de millimeter. Met name het proces is wat Van Rheeden boeit en het porselein als materie daagt haar uit. De tactiliteit die zo duidelijk was in haar dun opgeknepen werk, is ook bij het nieuwe werk aanwezig, in elke snede die precies zo moet zijn.

Olav Slingerland (NL)
Zelfproducerend ontwerper Olav Slingerland werkt dagelijks aan zijn creatieve, zelf gegoten keramische schalen, kommen en vazen. Het werk van Slingerland kenmerkt zich door organische vormen welke hij uitstekend weet te combineren met industriële details. Hiermee creëert hij verrassende contrasten in zijn werk. Het is geïnspireerd op het leven, in de breedste zin van het woord. Slingerland probeert met zijn keramiek te verrassen en blij te maken, wat voortkomt uit zijn levendige karakter. Daarom staat toegankelijkheid ook centraal in zijn ontwerpen. Dit uit zich in vloeiende vormen en kleuren die gemakkelijk te combineren zijn met diverse interieurs.

Guy Van Leemput (BE)
Van Leemput is gefascineerd door patronen. Vooral door patronen in de natuur. Middels zijn wiskundige achtergrond onderzocht hij hoe die patronen tot stand kwamen. Hij maakte kennis met het werk van Escher en werd gegrepen door zijn oneindigheidsbenaderingen maar ook hoe hij tegels vervormde tot boeiende dieren die mooi in elkaar passen. Het motiveerde hem om ook zelf een uitgebreid onderzoek te doen naar alle soorten vijfhoekige tegels en hoe die het vlak volledig kunnen betegelen. Hij maakte kennis met de rij van Fibonacci en later ontdekte Van Leemput dat de gulden snede de Fibonacci-aantallen laat ontstaan en dat het vooral die gulden snede is, die zorgt voor het ontstaan van al die fraaie patronen. En dat onze hersenen (en zeker de zijne) alles willen ordenen, structureren en catalogiseren.

Patty Wouters (BE)
Het keramisch werk van Patty Wouters typeert zich door het gebruik van verschillende materialen en technieken. Ze combineert  porselein met steengoed, ze integreert organische materialen, metaal en hout in haar sculpturen om uitdrukking te geven aan haar ideeën die betrekking hebben op de kwetsbaarheid van mens en natuur. Actuele thema’s zoals de vluchtelingenproblematiek, de opwarming van de aarde en de daarmee gepaard gaande bedreigingen komen ook aan bod in haar werk. Porselein is hierbij het materiaal bij uitstek! De witheid en transparantie straalt kwetsbaarheid uit. De vaak gecrakeleerde oppervlakte en gedeeltelijke gebroken elementen suggereren kwetsuren, lijden. Het gebruik van licht benadrukt de fragiliteit maar symboliseert tegelijkertijd de kracht van hoop.

INTERNATIONAL CERAMIC EXHIBITION ‘ART-GANIC’

Galerie Kempro is organizing a ceramics exhibition for the eighteenth time and has again succeeded this year in putting on a special exhibition with the cooperation of curator and renowned ceramist Patty Wouters. Specially for this exhibition, the renowned ceramists made unique works with the title ‘Art-Ganic’, which refers to the organic works of this group of international artists.

Barbro Åberg (Denmark)
Organic shapes and figures have been a recurring theme in Åberg’s work for some time. Åberg finds this abundance of inspiration on the one hand in nature; animals, plants, fossils, seeds and pods. On the other hand, through microscopic views, the macrocosm that surrounds us. Shapes, structures and shapes that are not visible to the human eye, but that we can see through a microscope.

Reinhilde van  Grieken (BE)
Van Grieken is a ceramist-sculptor. She often translates socially unacceptable events from current events into three dimensions. Sometimes it’s painful and cruel, sometimes funny and humorous. It is clear that Van Grieken considers interaction with the public to be important. Due to the subtle way in which she broaches the subject and hides it in her work, the confrontation with the viewer only comes later or it penetrates very slowly. The clay is used as a carrier for her story, as a painter does with the canvas. But she will not be stopped from making full use of clay as a plastic material. The boundaries between figurative and abstract disappear completely for her.

Martha Pachon Rodriguez (IT)
Pachon Rodriguez studied Fine Arts at the Surcolombiana University in Colombia. Early in her career, her ceramic works were large-scale installations in terracotta or stoneware. Later, after studying ‘Porcelain and Stoneware’ at the ‘Instituto d’Arte per la Ceramica’ in Faenza, Italy, Pachon Rodriguez started developing conceptual, thematic porcelain work. “For the artist, creating unique pieces is an event that represents a journey that includes a sacred dimension, a magical rite, an intellectual event that requires time, immense patience, skill and joy.”

Beatrijs van Rheeden (NL)
Van Rheeden’s porcelain work is clearly rooted in a Dutch tradition of abstract forms, clear lines and simple in essence. Her work arises intuitively. Her fascination for structures and the irregularities that can be found within them is expressed down to the millimeter, and it is above all the process that fascinates her. The tactility that was so evident in her thinly pinched work is also present in the new work, in every cut that has to be exactly like that. The porcelain as matter challenges her.

Olav Slingerland (NL)
Self-producing designer Olav Slingerland works daily on his creative, self-cast ceramic dishes, bowls and vases. Ceramics by Olav Slingerland are characterized by organic shapes which he knows how to combine excellently with industrial details. With this he creates surprising contrasts in his work. Ceramics by Olav Slingerland are inspired by life, in the broadest sense of the word. Slingerland tries to surprise and delight with its ceramics, which stems from its lively character. That is why accessibility is central to his designs. This is expressed in flowing shapes and colors that are easy to combine with various interiors.

Guy Van Leemput (BE)
Van Leemput is fascinated by patterns. Especially through patterns in nature. Using his mathematical background, he investigated how these patterns came about. He became acquainted with Escher’s work and was captivated by his approaches to infinity, but also how he transformed tiles into fascinating animals that fit together beautifully. It motivated him to do extensive research himself into all types of pentagonal tiles and how they can completely tile the surface. He became acquainted with the Fibonacci sequence and later Van Leemput discovered that the golden ratio gives rise to the Fibonacci numbers and that it is mainly the golden ratio that creates all those beautiful patterns. And that our brains (and certainly his) want to order, structure and catalog everything.

Patty Wouters (BE)
The ceramic work of Patty Wouters is characterized by the use of different materials and techniques. She combines porcelain with stoneware, she integrates organic materials, metal and wood in her sculptures to express her ideas related to the fragility of man and nature. Current themes such as the refugee problem, global warming and the associated threats are also addressed in her work. Porcelain is the material of choice here! The whiteness and transparency radiates vulnerability. The often crackled surface and partially broken elements suggest injuries, suffering. The use of light emphasizes the fragility but at the same time symbolizes the power of hope.
